Lessons Learned in Taking a Canadian Icon Global

Colin Osborne is currently President and Chief Executive Officer of Vicwest Inc., a $450 million dollar revenue TSX listed company (TSX:VIC). Vicwest Inc. operates two businesses, Vicwest Building Products – a leading manufacturer and distributor of construction products, and Westeel – now one of a handful of global providers of grain storage and handling systems.

Colin has been instrumental in overseeing Westeel’s evolution from a 100 year old Canadian focused company to a company which is rapidly expanding overseas and selling on 5 continents. Colin has extensive international experience including working in Japan, the Czech Republic and Mexico.

Prior to joining Vicwest, Colin provided consulting services to a variety of private equity, investment banking, manufacturing and engineering businesses, with a focus on mergers and acquisitions (M&A).  He has been involved in several significant M&A transactions and has extensive capital market experience including assisting in the raising of over $200 million of equity in North America and Europe.

Vicwest Inc.’s Westeel business is an icon in the Canadian Agricultural Industry. Over its 107 year history, it has built one of the most recognized brands in the Canadian farm community, and ultimately captured 60+ percent of the grain storage market.

For its first hundred years, Westeel’s focus was almost exclusively on Canada.  It recognized several years ago that in order to grow and to keep offering its customers the highest quality and most integrated solutions, it needed to expand into global markets.

Agriculture is one of the world’s truly global industries, however the growth tends to be in very complex environments, such as India, Russia, Ukraine; business environments that are completely different than Western Canada.

This presentation is about Westeel’s “lessons learned” as it has evolved into a global agricultural infrastructure provider now doing business on 5 continents.

Assessing International Business Competitiveness

Are you considering expanding your business internationally, off shoring or near shoring? If so, join Brad Watson for an exciting session on how Canadian and international businesses can make informed global business location decisions.
Brad will draw on KPMG’s 2012 Competitive Alternatives guide for comparing business locations in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific. The study looks at a wide range of issues when assessing competitiveness for business including: business costs, population and demographics, education and skilled labour, innovation, infrastructure, economic conditions, regulatory environment, cost of living, and quality of life.

Brad’s presentation can help small and medium-sized businesses to consider, reaffirm or further investigate the key factors that affect their own international business competitiveness and of businesses they may work with in other markets.
